Introduction of NEEC

By Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nasim

The National Educational Equipment Center (NEEC) was originally established as The West Pakistan Educational Equipment Technical Assistance Center (WEETAC) in 1964 under the technical assistance program of Ford Foundation USA. This Centre was visualized to develop scienti?c thinking amongst the school going children of Pakistan through manufacture of educational kits needed for practical / class room learning. The National Curriculum Wing of the Ministry of Education prepares the courses guide lines and then in consultation with the available faculty we design & develop prototypes of Science Equipment for Schools and Colleges using indigenous raw materials. The Centre consists of an infrastructure in the form of a modest workshop comprising of Machine Shop, Wood Working, Plastic Injection Molding Section, Glass Blowing Section, Optics Section and Fabrication Section, equipped with modern machinery. In addition, we have two blocks, one houses Auditorium, Library and Seminar Rooms and the second is Faculty Block comprising Subject Specialistís Laboratories in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Biology in addition to quality control section, Design/drawing section, warehouses and other ancillary services. We also prepare the manuals for practical and impart training to the science teachers about the use and maintenance of science kits. The NEEC has so far developed and standardized the Primary Teaching Kit consisting of 102 items covering the subjects of Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Urdu with a tool kit for grades I-V, a Middle School Science Kit consisting of 125 items covering the activities in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry & Biology and a Mathematics Kit consisting of 53 items covering the activities of important concepts up to elementary level. These kits have been supplied to all the four provinces, FATA, FANA and AJ K under different National Projects. The NEEC has also developed and standardized a High School Science Kit for high school level laboratories and developed the practical manual for teachers and students both in English and Urdu in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry & Biology. Currently, NEEC is working on elementary school project for National Rural Support Program. It is learnt over the years that school education upto 15 years is pivotal in shaping mind set and this unique contribution of NEEC over the last 45 years is unparallel and praiseworthy.
